Not everyone who goes into the woods comes out....

It was supposed to be a short hike, a way for Fletcher and Adam to kill time one boring afternoon. But when day turns into night and neither boy returns home, their town is thrown into turmoil.

Search teams comb the forest. Then Avery, the police chief's daughter, stumbles on a body. It's Fletcher-disoriented, beaten, and covered in blood. He has no memory of the incident, and worse yet, he has no idea what happened to the still-missing Adam....

As danger and suspicion grow, one thing becomes very clear: No one can escape the truth.

My So-Called Review:
The Escape, by Hannah Jayne is the story of two boys, Adam and Fletcher, who go hiking into the woods and end up getting way more than they bargained for when they’re both brutally attacked and left for dead. When the boys are reported missing, search parties set out to find them. Avery, the local police chief’s daughter, breaks away from her search group and ends up stumbling across Fletcher, body broken and barely alive. A few days later the town’s worst fears come to light as Adam’s body is found and to further complicate matters, Fletcher can’t seem to remember what happened in the woods. Avery decides she must help Fletcher, help him to remember what really happened and to find out who was behind these viscous attacks.

Told in the alternating POV of Fletcher and Avery, I was totally and completely hooked on The Escape from its opening pages to its shocking conclusion. I don’t think I’ve ever read a YA thriller quite like this one and I loved every moment of this fast paced thrill ride! Each scene becomes darker and more ominous as Avery and Fletcher move closer to discovering the truth of what happened in the woods. You just know it’s something so bad, so horrific that a few times I was actually hoping Fletcher’s memories wouldn’t return because I was too afraid to find out what happened. As bits of Fletcher’s memory starts to return it’s shown to us in flashbacks, these scenes were some of the creepiest I’ve ever read and I found myself needing to fall asleep with the light on!

I loved Avery’s character; she’s one of those girls that we don’t see enough in YA books. She’s smart, independent and loyal to a fault and I enjoyed that her relationship with her father was portrayed in such a positive way. Yes she goes behind his back in her quest for answers but each time she gets stuck or in over her head it’s her dad she turns too and that was great to read. Fletcher, OMGosh this boy just broke my heart! As the whole town starts to turn on him & question his lack of memory and potential involvement I couldn’t help but want to protect him as much as Avery did. His own mother seems slightly afraid of him at times and I could feel, so vividly, his pain and confusion; it was gutting to read!

The Escape is a fantastic psychological thriller that is perfectly geared towards both an older YA (16+) and Adult audience. It has everything I look for in a thriller and is one that will leave readers on the edge of their seats as they race to work out the clues of what happened to these boys in the woods! Be aware that there are a few graphic scenes that unfold through flashbacks, nothing too brutal but definitely not for the squeamish!!  This is the first book I’ve read by Hannah Jayne and I was so impressed that I will definitely be reading her other books, and soon!

Book Excerpt:
“Hello?” she called out. “This is Avery Templeton with Search Team Five. Hello?”

The silence was complete, except for the steady thump of Avery’s heart. She took a step forward and slid on the loose earth, tumbling forward onto her hands and knees. Rocks tore skin and the knees of her jeans as she slid. When she stopped- eight, ten feet at the most- she was breathing heavily, her mind reeling. She did a quick assessment for damage. Other than the sting on her palms, nothing hurt.

So why was there blood on her hands?

She brought her hands towards her face and grimaced as the streaks of rust-colored blood-congealed, dirt stained-that covered her palms.

She wasn’t bleeding.

This wasn’t her blood.

It was then that she heard the slow gurgle, the sparse intake of breath followed by a low, throaty whisper. “Avery, you have to help me.”

Avery stared at the figure lying in front of her, allowing her eyes to adjust to the dim light.

“Please.”

The word came out in a desperate hiss, and he clasped a muddy, blood-caked hand around her wrist, his grip limp, his fingers trembling.

She gasped. “Fletcher?”
